It starts with lots of little steps to get children reading - being able to identify letters, to sounding them out, then blending... and so the journey begins! What a fantastic journey we all take to read and an incredible one to be part of with your child. In this bundle we focus on literacy, looking at letter sounds, CVC words and then compound words. Lots of fun, hands on activities to enjoy with your little one.

We suggest these busy bags for children who are in (or going in to) reception upwards, as each child develops in their own time this is our recommended guideline only and may vary with your child.

Bag 1: Peg it!

“a” for apple, “b” for ball, “c” for cat...

Learning your letter sounds. This opens up a wealth of possibilities: being able to read a word and then a book. Or being able to write a word, then a sentence and eventually a story of one’s own. Our My Busy Bots bag uses bright, fun pictures to capture children’s imagination so they can identify the matching picture to each letter sound and pin a peg to it.

Contents:

  • An A6 information card with instructions, ideas to extend the activity and list of skills being developed
  • 26 Laminated A7 letter sound cards
  • 26 Small coloured pegs
  • 1 Brightly coloured storage bag

Bag 2: The fox sat on the mat

A child that can identify letters and understand the sounds they make is ready to start making their own words. Sounding and blending is where the fun begins. In this My Busy Bots bag children can begin making the all important consonant-vowel-consonant words with jumbo letter beads and move onto harder ones as they progress.

Contents:

  • An A6 information card with instructions and ideas to extend the activities and list of skills being developed
  • 25 Laminated A7 activity cards
  • 26 Jumbo letter beads
  • 1 Colourful lace
  • 1 Brightly coloured storage bag

Bag 3: Build-a-word

Compound words can open up a whole new way of looking at the words we say and how they can mean different things when put together. This My Busy Bots busy bag is a fun and memorable tool to show how two unrelated words can be combined to make a brand-new word. At this development stage, children are already familiar with how words can be decoded into sounds (like r-a-t), but compound words show them how words can be broken down into parts that have different meanings. A great help when learning to read bigger words!
